Twenty-one selenium toned 16″ x 20″ gelatin silver prints exhibited at the Native Canadian Centre, Toronto, May 3 – May 21, 2001, as a part of CONTACT 01. This work was commissioned by Mary Laronde of the Anishinabek Educational Institute, North Bay, Ontario, in 1999. Its purpose was to honour participants at an Elders conference held in Saulte Ste. Marie that January with a memento of the event. I was invited to set up a portrait studio in a large meeting room just off the main conference area. With the help of students and volunteers we were able to provide a quiet lounge-like area, away from the main conference activities. The rest just unfolded. People wandered in, sat, talked, laughed, had a juice, heckled, and sat for their portraits. The photo sessions became collaborative social events. Each portrait became a reflection of the individual, the group and myself, all in the active interplay of the moment.
